I never wrote why the title of my blog is Dancing photography. I’m not much of a dancer in fact I don’t dance in a classical manner. None the less I find a dance as a metaphor in my life and of course in photography.

We are obsessed by predicting events and by doing so, we have an illusion that events are under our control. But when we are incapable of predicting an event we feel a fear from the unknown. If I take a dance as a metaphor predictable is standing still and unpredictable is moving. So basically we are talking about movement and absence of movement.

A dancer jumps, spins, rolls but he does not fall and stop. He understand the pattern in this chaos, catch himself and movement continues. He is moving, but he’s remains in balance. I’ve learned that photography is a sort of a dance between a photographer and his / hers subject. Photography is two dimensional medium whereas we move (dance) in three dimensional space-and-time. We move, subject moves, circumstances are changing constantly and simultaneously from the beginning of everything.
In photography I’ve noticed that I make best photography when I do not focus on the picture through my lens but when I focus on my feelings toward the picture that I see through the lens. What am I trying to say is when I look through the lens I do not analyze composition as I would analyze a photograph, but I’m just moving around the subject and every slightest move makes that the picture feels differently. By doing so I’m literally moving through a landscape of my emotions.
It’s what I call dancing in photography on a landscape within.

  1. It’s true isn’t it? It’s amazing how picture feels different by changing viewpoint by just a centimeter. I guess the difference is like a centimeter on a guitar string.

I agree that fotografers life is like dance arround teh subject. I feel the problem in rhytm betwen fotografer and subject. I think the rhytm is guarantee for goot picture and the emotions are the greater part of it.

  4. Hej Vitomir!

Yes, rhythms echoes between the lines (pixels) of the picture and it’s the key of the picture!
