Birthday party of Boštjan Pucelj at Klevevž thermal spring, near Šmarješke Toplice, Slovenia. Wet Plate Photography at -3C without heat source. I prolonged sensitization from 3 to 5 minutes and I developed without sugar and added one drop of nitric acid for clearer blacks and silverish neutral whites. Developing time was 40 seconds.
I’m inviting you to the opening of my show on Friday 3rd of February 2012 in Sokolski dom in Škofja Loka, Slovenia.
About the project:
As a photojournalist for the weekly Mladina I have been daily photographing press conferences, politicians’ handshakes, and other “flash for cash” photo opportunities. At a certain point I became frustrated with these news-safaris, where the press officer in charge determines my and other photographers’ view angle, the timing and the expression of the politician(s). Searching for an approach that would motivate me personally, I decided to document the flower arrangements accompanying such public functions. At every event I thus also take a personal picture in addition to the usual news images, a picture that is out of the pre-set context. Instead of glorifying some important politician, it sets flowers in focus, thus degrading the politician to unsharp background that distracts the composition. The cure works perfectly and now I look forward to every press conference, no matter how trivial it is.
I have been working on this project for over six years now. With my Flower Power bouquets I have captured also world leaders, such as George Bush, Ban Ki-moon, Romano Prodi, Angela Merkel, DalajLama, Vladimir Putin and others. Let me quote Marcel Štefančič who commented the series: “A hundred years from now no one will know who these politicians were, what their names were, but everyone will still know what these flowers are called. That’s it – Flower Power.”

As a free-lance photographer I work for Mladina weekly, but I’m also a photo-editor of Global monthly. For december issue of Mladina I was assigned to make an advertisement for Global monthly. Inspired by batmanning video we made this ad. The original idea was that Dare would be hanging and I would photograph, but circumstances changed and we switched roles. On the video it looks like we tried only two times, but we did much more then that. It’s fun! This was my first batmanning. I found a new talent!
PS: I must admit that only now I saw on youtube some very gruesome batmanning falls, so don’t do this if you’re not payed for some huge amount of money like in my case.
PPS: To non Slovenians, this was a joke
PPPS: If you like the music, check N’Toko’s myspace site.
This morning it was temperature 4C (39F) and it was perfect to try out how does Wet Plate Collodion process work at this temperature. I had an alcohol burner (not my liver) with which I could heat up chemicals if I would need to, but it was surprisingly not needed. I did prolonged time of sensitizing a plate from 3min to 6 min and developing was a bit longer, but that was the only difference of usual procedure. I photographed an old apple tree that was sunbathing.
I used my Kodak Folding Brownie At my first exposure I didn’t fixed lens properly and it was out of focus. I repeated the shot, but I kind of like the un-fucused picture just as well. This two pics are tintypes then I repeat the shot, but I poured collodion on glass plate. I’m attaching a picture as a glass negative looks on a black velvet. That principle of backing a collodion negative with a black background it’s called an ambrotype. Check this negative bellow, half it’s on a black velvet and half is on a white paper. A pure magic, I tell you!
I’m proud to present my new photo-movie on theater performance Dom za igralce, directed by Matjaž Farič and produced by Anton Podbevšek Teater. I’ve shot tons of photographs and then I was asked to make a teaser that will include also video. It’s challenging to make a video and I know what weakness and advantages are if you are shooting video with a video camera or if you’re making it with a photo-camera (nikon D3s and D7000). I was checking videos from other theater performances, but I soon decided I’ll make my own narrative. I mixed ambient sound from the performance, clean studio sound recording from the performance, an interview with the theater director Matjaž Farič, video recording from the performance and last but not least, photographs. I am foremost a photographer
How do you like it? Does it work? I know if you don’t speak the proper language it’s hard to get the full impression, but still.
Rate, comment, rock and roll!
Tomorrow the theater Anton Podbevšek Teater is having a premier theater performance OD-LOČITEV V MUKDENU / Bertolt Brecht: Dajevec. Nejevec in Ukrep. This is a theater performance by Bertolt Brecht and few days before his death he was asked which of his works present a theater of the future and he without hesitation answered Die Maßnahme. Theater director Matjaž Berger was intrigued by this statement and made this performance. The central theme of all three parts is dealing with a sacrifice of an individual in relation to a collective. The most touching moment is a statement of Peter Čeferin, the famous lawyer that defended Albanian miner workers from Stari trg in year 1989. This was the most notorious trial in former Yugoslavia, a huge violation of human rights and obvious political trial. Theater director Matjaž Berger draw a correlation of Bertolt’s abstract idea into real life event that happened in our former country in relative recent times.
I’ve made this photo-movie with photographs, an interview with the theater director, sound from the show and a theme song. It is a sort of teaser before the premier of the show and I think this kind of Photo-movies are having a great potential in the future. I hope you’ll enjoy it even if you don’t speak my language.
This is a photo-movie I’ve done at the Fotopub festival, multimedia workshop tutored by Mike Lusmore and Rebecca Harley. For you who don’t understand the proper language, I know subtitles are not “reader friendly”, but I’ll fix that soon.
As for a Fotopub assessment, I thought I know something about multimedia, but I learned just how little do I know. I learned hugely about sound, how to recored it properly, edit it, narrative of sound recording and of course how to stick it together in a photo-movie. I find photo-movie a really huge genre that I’m planning to devote my attention also in the future (so much fun).
