Flower Power and Vladimir Putin

Flower - Power project

Regular readers of my blog know well my Flower Power project that is a personal rebellion against politics and news-photojournalistic-safaris. Instead glorifying politicians I’m focusing on plants and degrading politicians on disturbing background. It was exhibited on 6th U3 Slovenian art triennial in Gallery of Modern Art in Ljubljana, which I consider a Rock and Roll achievement. Yesterday Vladimir Putin was visiting Slovenia and I’ve made this pictures of beautiful plants. I hope you will enjoy it and let Flower Power be with you.

Upam, da vam bodo všeč in naj vas Flower Power spremlja.

A resignation of Zoran Thaler, a Member of the Europarliament

Yesterday Zoran Thaler, a Member of the Europarliament resigned because of allegations of bribing by Sunday Times. I think it was the only proper decision to be made and I’m sure that the investigation will clarify his true motifs. If I was cooperating with some doggy lobbying company to discover their dirty game, I would definitely ask for help or if I would think that I can do it on my own, I would secretly record the conversation, or gather some other evidence on my own. Only fact that goes in behalf of Thaler is that he didn’t issue an invoice. Perhaps he is always issue late, as I am, with issuing invoices. Perhaps he had a second thought about where this is going, perhaps he was more cautious then other MP’s that were more clearly caught. The fact that he didn’t want to answer journalistic questions and he walked away, proves to me, that he knows his defense is leaking from all sides.

More Hi-Res images in my archive.

Romas colectively cleaning their settlement Dobruška vas, Škocjan, Slovenia

Today there was a cleansing action in Roma settlement Dobruška vas, Slovenia. After Škocjan municipality got a new major, a plan was accepted to improve living conditions for Roma settlement. First action was to clean the Roma settlement and municipality supplied trash bags and containers, while Roma cleaned the trash. Next action is a supply of drinking water. These Romas have nearest access to drinking water on 5km distanced graveyard. During the winter also this pipe is closed so they melt snow or drink from a stream that is polluted from farm fields and landfill. The stream serves also as a canalization for the settlement. This Roma settlement suffered a lot. Six years ago Slovenian terrorists throw a hand grenade through a window of last house in the settlement, killing a teacher’s assistant and her mother. Of course this terrorists are still unconvicted, since court can not agree about evidence.

However today sun was shining in this settlement after a very long time. As a journalist I was personally surprised that no journalist covered the event, inspite that I’ve personally told them this will be happening. As a contrast let me show a picture from yesterday’s anti-Roma protest in front of town hall in Novo mesto. There were about 40 protesters and 13 journalists.

More about terrorists killing Romas you can read on THIS link.

To je to naselje, kjer so pred šestimi leti slovenski teroristi vrgli bombo skozi okno zadnje hiše v naselju in ubili pomočnico učiteljice in njeno mamo.

New cover page of Mladina weekly

Photography: Borut Peterlin, Graphic design Ivian Mujezinovič Kan, Creative director Robert Botteri

Here is a new cover page of today’s Mladina weekly. Anybody who is photographing news photography in Slovenia knows how difficult is to caught J.J. off guard, to catch a gesture that is expressing something more, then just a straight portrait from a news event. It was a split second moment and I had to avoid a flag on a table. I’m attaching a light-box.

Katarina Avbar – creative portrait for Mladina weekly

with 4 comments

katarina avbar 20110207_3679

Katarina Avbar is a singer-songwriter and I made this portrait for Mladina weekly. Yesterday morning I got an assignment and in the afternoon we met and I decided that I’ll do a portrait right away. Today is a holiday in Slovenia and I was reluctant to go to Ljubljana again. We met in chambers of Slovenian Writers Association, since she is collaborating with them. So here we were without a good concept how to make a picture. I like the room, since it looks like a room from The Shining film at Timber Lodge Hotel. So first I took a picture as a sketch and I loved the symmetry of the room, just there were way too many elements. I wondered how can I get rid of everything and focus only on fabulous sculptures of Slovenian writers and on beautiful Katarina.

I’m publishing work in progress pictures. You can see the first picture with initial view of the room. I decided to flip the table, but composition was way too predictable and sculptures didn’t play a meaningful role in the picture. I took a picture then I tried to even more reduce the elements on the picture and focus on only four sculptures with Katarina behind. When she stepped behind the sculptures the doors were not seen and as you can see from the first picture I loved the doors and I wondered how can I keep them in the picture. I asked Katarina to stand on a chair and hold a guitar. The guitar didn’t had a strap so she just hold it by her legs. P.E.R.F.E.C.T. That vertical position of a guitar goes perfectly with a perspective. On the end all I needed is to light it accordingly with a composition, so I used two flashes Nikon SB 800 and SB900 triggered by SU-800. Flash above sculptures had a softbox, flash lying on the floor in front of Katarina was set on 35mm zoom, since I wanted to have shadows going along the perspective. You can also see how I was playing with the light above the sculptures figuring out what combination of shadows works best.

I’m really pleased with the result. I’m describing all this because many photographers are discouraged to start doing a photography since they don’t have a clear, detailed concept. Let me tell you a secret. Even God doesn’t have a concept, so stop worrying and just do the picture.

Crucifix on a cover of Mladina weekly (not staged!)

with 12 comments

This is a cover of Friday’s Mladina weekly where we’re writing about financial breakdown of catholic church of the city of Maribor and their financial speculations. This picture is not staged. A reader Polona Gorišek sent us her picture of the crucifix done by a cell phone. It was perfect motif for a theme of this issue and after I’ve redo the picture we decided to run it on a cover and It can’t be a blasphemy, since it’s not staged, it’s a straight shot.

OK, when we found the crucifix it was already night, so I’ve done two exposures. First I expose it for 15 min, so I’ve recorded some sky, then I illuminated the crucifix. I tried with lightbrushing, with a flash, but on the end I realized it’s best if I just flash a burst of flash straight down on the ground and light reflected from snow, gave this perfect soft, bounced light. I’m attaching a lightbox of images for a light study.

Before some might accuse me of blasphemy, let me note that half a year ago my picture was on a cover of Marija magazine and I give it for free. I just asked to be captioned Borut Peterlin/Mladina and it is. So don’t blame me, I’m just taking pictures, the boss upstairs takes all the credit. (and Japanese geeks from Nikon)

——————————————————————–

Poorest Roma in Slovenia (also this is EU)

with 11 comments

20110114_8652

Last week I’ve visited two Roma families that are living on their own land in Semič, Slovenia. They are isolated from Roma and Slovenian community. I saw a lot of Roma communities but they were surely the poorest. They are even poorer then Roma in Dobruška vas.

My daughters in Roma settlementWhen I showed this pictures to my three years old daughter she said, they are poor because they are stealing, isn’t? I couldn’t believe my ears. I explained that theft is not limited to nationality. I also wanted to add that many members of Slovenian elite are accused and prosecuted because they were stealing (cheating, bribing, blackmailing,…) and they are far from being poor, but I didn’t want to leave a feeling that crime pays off, although it’s obvious that white collar crime does pay off in Slovenia.

I explained my dear daughter that these Roma are poor because they are not educated and they are not educated because they don’t speak Slovenian and they don’t want to go to school because they are dirty since they don’t have a running (or drinking) water, nor electricity. I ask her how would she felt of she would not wear her beautiful skirt, but she would wear that old, dirty, smelly oversize coat? I show her all the details of their home, where they are cooking, eating, sleeping. Their room is all in smoke, because of horrible heating. I show her that they don’t even have doors! Next day I took both daughters to Roma settlement in Brezje. I had many pictures to give away, so I asked my daughters to join me. Little Brina was very shocked. She said. Isn’t true daddy, that the boy in the back is not being cold, because he’s used to walk barefoot in cold although it’s winter? I explain her that this is like in story Levi Devžej where children were really poor and they were walking barefooted through snow. Also Lučka was very touched by the experience.

Silently I was thinking that these Roma are as poor as my ancestors about two or three hundred years ago. And I thought how will our future generation looked at us, on our generation. Perhaps they will look this pictures and even read this and wondered how could we be so primitive that we ruined this planet, not from lack of knowledge, but because of greed. Perhaps my great, great, great, great grand children will live in this kind of room…

New coverpage of Mladina weekly

Ciao tutti,
here is a cover page of tomorrow’s Mladina weekly. Creative editor asked me if I can do a cover with vegetable on a theme of ecology, new mentality, etc… I was reluctant to go ahead with the whole thing, knowing it demands a lot of work and preparation, but since this is my last issue of Mladina weekly on a position of photoeditor I give it a try. (I’ll still work as a photographer for Mladina).

With a help of my lovely wife Alenka (check her site) we made an improvised table top studio. I needed clay to shape up a face on which I will lay vegetable. I got it from my neighbor Vesna Majes Klančičar (she makes fantastic pottery). And here is the result. I didn’t use almost no photoshop, just fine tunning. The most surprising thing was that when I send it to creative director, he asked me how (and why) did I portray a particular Slovenian politician? Did I?
So I’m asking you does it resemble to some Slovenian politician?
PS: Do you remember last vegetable art work by A5 and B5? LINK…

Nisem skoraj nič uporabljal photoshopa, le tu in tam sem kak detajl zgladil in blitvo očistil glinenih prstnih odtisov. Najbolj me je presenetil komentar urednika, ki me je vprašal kako (in zakaj) sem upodobil določenega politika. Kaj sem res, sem mu vrnil vprašanje.
Tako sprašujem vas. Komu je podoben ta obraz?

PS: Se še spomnite zadnje mojstrovine z zelenjavo, sirom, šunko, mlekom, keksi, tima A5 in B5? (POVEZAVA)
