Striptiz photosession does look like I’m mad

_mg_5606_borut_peterlin.jpgToday I was photographing Jasmina Cibić an incredible artist. On the first glimpse of her site I realize we are on the same level of understanding photography and I had no doubt it will be fun taking her portraits. Yesterday she flew to Ljubljana from London and I suggested we should meet and perhaps take few pictures and if we will not feel that we’re getting somewhere, we will meet again tomorrow. Of course I had no idea how should I photograph her, beside that I want to have a clear picture with just few elements. Sort of her aesthetic.

We met in front of Mladina building and on the other side of the street there was a big pile of junk. I approached it with great interest, looking for some stuff I would want to include in the picture. _mg_5630_borut_peterlin.jpgI took this old gorgeous microwave and I knew it will make the picture. We drove to a football court where I could find a clear background. _mg_5557_borut_peterlin.jpg_mg_5582_borut_peterlin.jpgAt_the_beginning we were just wondering how can we use the microwave in the picture, starting with silly advertising shots laughing our guts out. _mg_5588_borut_peterlin.jpgThen I suggested she should throw the microwave in the air and let it fall. Again we laughed and I knew we are on the right track. All the concepts evaporated and there was nothing left beside pure visual elements and even microwave vanished. All it was left from it was a beautiful square in which sunset was mirroring. _mg_5592_borut_peterlin.jpg_mg_5616_borut_peterlin.jpg

PS:_Now_I’m_not so sure anymore which picture is better. The first picture in this post or the last one?

  1. I think the last one. Her expression is nicer and your reflection hidden behind her hand looks very symbolic and stuff.
The first one is, probably because of the diagonal composition, much more dynamic though.

  2. You defined my dilemma exactly! The picture is not about microwave, but it’s all about shapes of amorfic background and sharp edged square. It does not make the solution any easier though, but at least we pinpoint the properties of the image. I’ll wait for others + Jasmina’s opinion.

Blog is great for that kind of things!

Cheers to you and everybody that will follow,

  3. Last one. 🙂 But I admit, it is hard to choose between these two.

ps. Hmmm… forgive me, if I change my mind during the day.

  4. I’d go for the first if it had the same eye contact as the last. 😀

  5. ha, ha that’s tricky answer Ivan. Since we can not set up a picture as a puzzle, I’m guessing that you’re voting for second one.

  6. He he, i’m not sure your guess is right. 🙂 I like some things about both pictures. Background and the position of microwave is better on the first one, but her expression much better on the last one and i like the photographer reflection covered with hand.

    I’m not much of a help i know… 😀

  7. Totally agree with Ivan. Her eyes are incredible on first picture.

  8. The last one, just turn it a bit, then crop it, maybe even to 4:3, and you can set some blur to the edges if you want aesthetic effect. GJ!

  9. Last one has more layers, to deal with…first one is a bit more flat…so I’ll go for last one. 😉

  10. Normalno, zadnja je definitivno najbolja, najostrija, najsadrzajnija, najstabilnija, ma jednom recju EXTRA

    30 January, 2007 at 19:10

  11. Extra thanks!
Klemen I do not blur or do some additional extraordinary digital effects to the picture. It’s not that I have something against it, I just don’t do it. I already cropped out the sky and right edge of the image, but kept a ration of 2:3.

Also Jasmina voted for last picture and Baco extra it is 🙂

  12. no, no, no if I would crop it more I would lose anamorphic background. Actually the trick in my Striptiz portraits is taking away attention from a person being portraited. I’m doing that by making a visual tension, catching viewer unprepared and making the picture interesting.

As we all know portraits are about faces and that can be very boring. We are thought how to read a picture and the accent is always on the face (eyes).

What I’m trying to do is distract viewer’s attention away from the face and for that I use all tricks I know and every day I’m trying to invent new ones. I use perspective, contrast, shapes,  expressions, gestures, unusual situation (I even nailed a computer on a tree) just to distract a viewers attention away from the natural interest in faces.

Of course on the end I gave in and viewer always wins in his/hers curiosity. It’s a visual roller-coaster with happy ending 🙂

  14. Probably I’m little late, but nevertheless I vote for 5588, playing football with square ball, that’s game we are looking for

  15. Wait for me!! Wonderful photos – I would definitely go for the last one – I like the idea that her hand is actually over the photographer’s face, so eventhough she’s the ‘object’ here, she’s the one controlling her art image! Besides, she delivers her art through her hands so I think the fact that they are disproportionate on this photo fits well in the whole context.
