Daughter facing future

leave a comment »

20170224_8144Oh, I am so happy for this photograph I’ve created! And it’s a portrait of Brina, of my youngest daughter that does not want to be photographed very often! And she has a birthday today, she is 10 years old! Exactly on today’s date, ten years ago she took her first breath and joined us on our path of life.

In the video I’ve explained almost everything. I wanted to discuss the composition, but on the end I did not. When photographing I was in dilemma if I want her facing left or right. It would be more natural to be facing right, in the direction that we read a photograph. When I say we, I mean westerners, we read written word from left to right, that is why it would be more natural that she would face right. But on the end I’ve decided that she should face left. Because of her posture, standing brave, facing something that is out of the frame. But we see the thorns surrounding her. But she glows, she is surrounded by white back-light.

For us who know Brina well, we know how suitable is this portrait of her. She is really a fighter. Boys do not want to mess around with her because she knows how to punch. Of course I have thought her how to defend herself. I told both of my daughters that they will not go out on a date before they will not demonstrate how to use elbows and knees in self defence. Yep, that is our Brina! I’ve listed the print on eBay (link).

Silver chloride gelatin paper, a contact copy from my collodion negative.I have an art student from Barcelona here, her name is Ana and she is assisting me. First week we had basic darkroom techniques and the second week she is already printing contact copies from collodion negative on silver-chloride paper and split toning them. I’ve listed that print on eBay too.

Ghost Window in wet plate collodion

with 3 comments

Dear followers,

This vlog should be published earlier, but I am missing three of my cameras. All small ones, like analogue compact Rollei camera, GoPro 3+ and Nikon J5 cameras. I have no idea what happened to them. In 30 years I have not lost a camera. I almost did, but never really. This small cameras were in my bag and I was carry them always with me. It might be that I forgot my backpack somewhere, but is more likely that someone took it out of my car. Today’s thieves do not need to brake a window, to get in your car. When I went to Prague I was resting on a rest stop and a thief silently broke in my car, without leaving any damage or signs. He did this while I was resting in the car! But then I woke up and he fled. Without steeling anything. So it might be that it was stolen or not. I do not know. Too many things happening in my life right now and this is the price to pay. Although this event is annoying it does not put me off. In fact that is why I bought Nikon J5, because I didn’t want to use the almighty and all expensive Nikon D4! Imagine that would happen with my Nikon D4 and my expensive lenses!

Anyway… Here is my latest vlog where I continue working on my book A Father’s Tale. A photo-book is not an album of images. It is a sequence of images carefully narrated through each page. Just like when music notes are containing parts that are actually bringing the orchestra to quit down or even to a complete stop, also photo-book must have parts in the book where an eye will relax, digest, reflect.

My idea is that the photo-book of my daughters should contain images that on information level do not tell you anything about them, but the images are containing certain mood that is bringing the viewer’s attention away from the information level and building the story on emotional level.

So that is why I’ve decided to photograph this window. I could ask one of my daughters to stand there or even I could stand by the window, but I’ve decided to keep it calm and simple. It is just one image in the book, but important one.

I hope you will like the image and the video. Please subscribe and share. My plan is to build up large enough social network and sell my books directly to my audience. And/Or with the large enough social network, main stream publishers will be interested in publishing the book. So thank you for subscribing to my YouTube channel, to my blog, to FB page and to my Instagram.

Being Cold / Topshit Photography Vlog, E 014

leave a comment »

Dearest followers,
here is my newest vlog. In December I’ve been travelling from Slovenia to Tuscany and then to Berlin and Hamburg. Proper south – north EU tour. I drove like 4000 km or so. Finally I’ve made the vlog from north part of the trip, but southern part is being edited. It takes whole lot of time, these videos.

This video  is kind of personal, not much photography tips&tricks involved. Is that OK? I’m thinking to do separate my personal vlogs and tutorial videos. Vlogs will be shorter and more funny, whereas tutorial videos will be longer and more detailed.

In this video I’m talking about the cold, that consist of two components. One is low temperature and the second is interpretation of the low temperature. It is talking about the reality and interpretation of the reality. Cold is perfect example how we love drama and how that drama is making us just more dependent on the comfort thqat seize to be comfort, but it becomes necessity and comfort becomes something else, like a super-car or something that is beyond our reach. Perfect formula for personal drama! But the bottom line is that what I’ve wrote about the cold goes for everything in the world. You may ask yourself which part of the circumstances are real concern and which part is a drama that I am addicted to. I am not pretending to be beyond it, on the contrary, these insights are very personal and very real life situations. Cold is just the easiest to be identified with so I leave you to ponder that for a moment and I’m challenging you to copy/paste the insight on whatever life situation you are in at this particular moment, at this particular drama.

OK, I’ve printed an edition of 50 prints and 14 are still on sale, that is from edition of 32/50 to 48/50, with exception of 36 and 42. Those copies I’m keeping them. The price is 50 EUR per print, it is signed, numbered, unmated, in a sleeve, with a sheet of data in the back.

HERE is the link to the listing. It is limited edition and only 13 are available. A big thanks to my patreons, who are gfenerlously supporting me every month. Perhaps you might join them and you will receive a print in the mail later this year! WWW.PATREON.COM/BORUTPETERLIN

Exhibition in Bratislava during Month of Photography

with one comment

.
During Month of Photography in Bratislava I was invited by Gallery Photon, to exhibit in the gallery of Embassy of Republic Slovenia. I decided to try something different, to present my work in old windows. I’m presenting a very intimate story of fears and delights being a parent and the window frames are emphasising hand made craft of my photographs and the effect of looking through window inside. I was very satisfied with the effect although needless to say I was full of doubts if this will actually work or make sense. I hope you agree, it does work.

I really wanted to exhibit this project, because as a teenager I saw the exhibition of Sally Mann and her project Immediate Family and this was for me very important personal motivation. Not only her work inspired me to photograph my family, but also it was in Sally Mann’s work I first time saw a 19th Century hand made photography used in contemporary art. On top of that, I am in the middle of divorce and setting up this work was so painful. I was totally ambushed by emotions from the past, while working on the exhibition. You don’t see that in the video, of course, but photographs are full of it.

Thank you to Gallery Photon, Dejan Sluga, Miha Colner, Embassy of R. Slovenia in Bratislava, Month of Photography in Bratislava and of course my family, Lučka, Brina and Alenka Peterlin.

On THIS link you can see the gallery of the images.

Here is a video few years old, where I’m talking about A Father’s Tale project, early version of the project.

In this episode of my vlog, I’ve started a collaboration with my daughters in my photography project A Father’s Tale. I’ve been talking before about my project, but now, when I am in the middle of divorce, I’m bonding with my kids in this kind of creative way.

The prints we’ve created are listed on Ebay, as an auction, so I thank you for bidding, liking and sharing my videos. I thank my patreons who are supporting me monthly via platform PATREON.com.

Transcending reality in wet plate collodion / Vlog E02, S01

leave a comment »

Dear followers,
as I’ve promised I’m publishing my third episode (I count also the episode zero) of my vlog while pursuing my goal to publish an artist photo-book.  Of course, the theme of my book will be Kočevski rog woodland and this time I went to one of the most beautiful places, Ponikve valley.

I was wondering how long should my vlog videos be and what should be the mix of entertainment and informative content. This is what I think it’s good. Please let me know your opinion. In each episode I will include a tip or two about the process, but the main topic will be artistic vision, composition, asking questions and the search for answers. Just don’t ask me to do camera review blogs, they are boring. Photography and cameras is like traveling and wheels. It is related, but not dependent upon. I will do a book review, here and there, but not one of those 100 famous photographers everybody know. I will rather do a review of work that nobody knows, like I’ve done from Peter Župnik, Herman Pivk and many others. Basically photographers whose quality does belong on top 100 list, but they will never be world famous photographers, because of circumstances.

I’ve described my intention in the previous blog post, but let me highlight that I haven’t realised before, but all the likes and shares are well important, since the large social network is the guarantee that my book will actually be published, so thank you in advance! So if you think this content is worthy, please press like and share it. If I’ve made your day, please you could buy me a cup of tea every month via my PATREON page and if you could afford, thank you for bidding on my Ebay auction.

The print on sale is an albumen print, toned with gold toner, from wet plate collodion negative. It’s listed on EBAY.

I thank David Cutter for the music and Fiona Cambell for the disclaimer voice.

From barbed wired EU border, with love…

leave a comment »

Some time ago I’ve made a video about barbed wired EU border (link) and here is another episode from the project. I do not know exactly how will it developed, but I feel the need to document the time and place where I live. I enjoy these expeditions so much. Being away from everyone, from everything doing photography, but not being sure if anybody including myself needs those images. As a professional photographer I’ve developed  disfunctionality because photography as a medium is the main source of income and although this is a good thing in the manner I am entitled to devote most of my time to the medium it also creates huge aberration in the process of evaluating the work that I do.  This is the aberration I’m mentioning, but I have blind faith that this will pay for my retirement, because social security surely will not.

My next step is to make prints out of the negatives. It will be very different then those digitally converted reproductions, but about that in the next video.

Christmas special video on albumen printing and wet plate collodion negative

with 6 comments

Ha, I finally finished my Christmas special video, few days after Christmas, but never mind. In this video I’m researching different lenses from Petzval Gasc & Charconnet from 1860’s to Voigtlander Heliar from 1930’s to Schneider Tele-Xenar from 1970’s. Then I’m making albumen prints from wet plate collodion negatives and I’m analysing the results. It’s my home-work for my new project on Schengen border that is wrapped in barbed wire, but more about it later.

Screenshot 2015-12-27 15.17.45.pngOf course I’m listing the best print on Ebay as an auction from $ 0,99 USD and I’ve set it for five days, so it will be ending at the end of the year. Party like it’s 1999! I’m really happy with this work, it’s my final home-work, before starting a new project. As you probably know, European Union is a union of different countries, but the official – police- border is not set at the final frontier of the EU, but it’s actually set on the border of Slovenia and Hungary, if we are talking about south east border. HERE is a link about the Schengen Area of 26 countries and HERE is how it looks in barb wire! I will devote a post about my new project, probably before the end of the year.

About the print, I hope you like it, it’s the best I can do. It’s the closest I got to the perfect albumen prints done by Eadweard Muybridge, that I’ve seen in George Eastman House. In the print I’ve invested absolutely all the knowledge I have about wet plate collodion negatives, albumen printing processes, large format cameras and photography on general.

And you can tell, I’m not taking any shortcuts! Some people prefer to drive a car, fast cars, but I prefer to walk. Sure, it takes much more effort and yes, I might arrive at the same place much later then everybody, but when we will arrive to our goals, although standing side by side, we will not be the same people, as we started the journey. And… I prefer to walk, I prefer to do hand-made photography.

If you want to learn the process properly, you need to go to George Eastman House, where you will see vintage prints from Masters of Photography and you will be thought by a master of photography, Mark Osterman! If you are based in EU, you don’t need me to express my condolence, but you can also take some of my topshit workshops. Schedule for 2016 is coming soon.

Last but not least, I must tell you that I’m over flooded with emails concerning details about the process. I can’t answer all of them, but I do make a reply to every question asked by my patrons, so if you want to join the crowd, please visit my patreon.com/borutpeterlin site.

Thank you for supporting my work, either trough bidding on my prints, sharing my videos and foremost being my patreon. I appreciate it a lot!

Today is the 20th anniversary of the end of war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and I’m opening an exhibition “Tour de Dayton”

with 7 comments

Today, 14th of December 2015, is the 20th anniversary of the end of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The war ended in 1995 with a peace accord signed by Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian political leaders in Dayton, Ohio, USA. By this peace accord Bosnia and Herzegovina was devided into two ethnical entities, Republic Srbska and Federation of BiH. Locally this border is also named as Dayton border.

I decided to do a project about this border that never existed before, by documenting the border on a bicycle. I named the project Tour de Dayton. I cycled on this ethnical border and photographed Bosnian landscape and how it became a medium in the hands of new nationalistic politics and explore how this new nationalistic symbolism coexist with symbols of former Socialistic Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

I decided to cycle on the border with my camera and heavy duty panoramic head Manfrotto 303 plus (video-log about the gear). Why cycling? Bicycle is the best transportation system for a travel photographer, no doubt about that, plus I wanted to physically endure the path, the road, the border. I must admit immediately, that I haven’t succeed it, I didn’t cycled trough all the border, but only about 500 km on two separate occasions.

The reason why I failed is of boring financial nature. Not that I couldn’t finance the project, it is cheap to cycle, but I received a commission I couldn’t say no and I had to return back home and do the job. You know, the curse of being an artist, a professional photographer and responsible father at the same time plus on top of everything being born with workaholic disability of only two hands!?!?

Therefore I never exhibited my project, but today is the 20th anniversary, so I’m making sort of guerrilla exhibition in one of the best galleries in Slovenia, Photon Gallery. My exhibition will be on the walls for only today and tomorrow, since they are opening a new show on Friday and I jumped for a day or two.

Is it worth it, an exhibition for a day? Absolutely! I consider myself a documentary photography and I have this ridicules drive that I need to document the environment, to express my feelings about it and by doing it to experience the life fully. At the bottom is a video-log on the project, from 2011.

So I invite you to the opening of my exhibition today, on Monday, 20th of December, 2015, at 19:00 in Gallery Photon, Ljubljana, Slovenia.
