Collodion portrait of an actor Branko Jordan

with 3 comments

20140523-branko-jordan001 Anton Podbevšek Teater will have tomorrow a premier of new theater show,
AMOR OMNIA VINCIT* and I’ve made digital documentation of the show, but I couldn’t resist not to take a snapshot in collodion technique of my friend Branko Jordan, one of the most prominent actor of his generation in this corner of the world. The plate has some fog, but concerning the timing and working condition I love it. In fact the fog, stains and everything else is just ideal for my taste!

For the promotion of theater shows I also developed a form of video teaser for Internet and social networks. It’s a mixture of video and photography, accompanied by a statement of the director followed with a scene from the show, to illustrate abstract words of the concept with an example from the show. This form of a teaser I perfected over two years and now I think it’s best that I could do. It also attract a lot of attention and popularize theater among iGeneration.

Blažka Müller Pograjc: AMOR OMNIA VINCIT*
Director: Matjaž Pograjc
Actors: Katarina Stegnar, Gorka Berden, Marijana Brecelj, Branko Jordan, Pavle Ravnohrib, Vito Weis in Enya Belak, Tamara Polanc, Kristina Rozman, Veronika Valdés
Produkcija: Anton Podbevšek Teater

Video teaser about the new theater performance of Anton Podbevšek Teater

Dear topshit readers of topshit blog,
I do keep focus of this blog on wet plate collodion process, but I’m receiving many questions sort of. OK, you do this 19th Century mambo jambo photography, but what you do for a living? On these questions I politely explain that I tried my career as an artist, I tried as a bureaucrat, I did my best as a carpenter, but only until a friend of mine introduce me to the art of human trafficking (Slovenia’s border is EU’s Schengen border), I finally have enough resources, to devote my time to wet plate collodion process and other 19th Century photographic techniques.

But seriously, since I’m “fortunate” enough to live in Slovenia, that is a micro market, I’ve been forced to learn just about everything that you can do with a camera. One of my three regular clients is also Anton Podbevšek Teater for which I’m mainly doing photography, but since cameras are recording also video, I started to play with that just as well. Now I’m hired to make also video teasers that are promoting theater performances on youtube, facebook and other social networking. This is my best video teaser so far. Words are really important, but even if you don’t speak the proper language, you will get the idea from visuals and music. I devoted extra attention to artist’s statements. I’ve made like 15 minutes of interviews and then I’ve carefully chosen 3 x 30 seconds of statements that perfectly fit visuals.

So the point of this post is that if you take an extra effort, you have another product to sell and support your behaviour disorder that wet plate collodion definitely is.

But bottom line is that this theater performance can not be missed and they have a show on 11th,12th,13th of October 2013. At 20.00. In Anton Podbevšek Teater.

My best portrait in Wet Plate Collodion – Boris Cavazza

with 3 comments

Photo: Borut Peterlin

A special edition of Mladina with interviews was issued and I’ve done quite a few portraits. My best one is without a doubt, a portrait of Boris Cavazza, the legend of Slovenian theater. Recently his biography was published and his life’s story under pen of writer Vesna Milek is extraordinary indeed! It was sould out three times and eventually I’m sure it’ll be translated into English.

This portraits I’ve done with two cameras. Portraits on wet plate collodion on glass plate I’ve done on a Plaubel format 13x18cm and other B/W portraits I’ve done on a Shen Hao G45 format 4×5″. Wet Plate Collodion portrait I’ve done in VIST studio and Darko Sintič was assisting me. THX Dare! The portrait is so dead sharp because I illuminated with flashes. During portraying at Park Zvedza in Ljubljana, a photographer Marko Šinkovec came by and took few behind the shoot images. THX Marko!

Theater performance of Siddharta & Anton Podbevšek Teater

with one comment

Last week an amazing theater performance happened. Theater group Anton Podbevšek Teater and Siddharta rock band made a theater performance ČlovekA z bombami / de-tonacija with author of the concept and director of the show Matjaž Berger. The theater act was devoted to two avantgarde artists from the beginning of 20th century Anton Podbevšek and Srečko Kosovel. Siddharta wrote new music for this occasion and it’s fantastic! I hope they will issue a CD with this material! The event happened as an introductory event to a Rock Otočec festival.
The performance was a blast and I hope my photographs do share some vibes with you. More info about the show you can find on Anton Podbevšek Teater site.

PS: For those who understand Slovenian, HERE is a fantastic post about the show.

A theater performance Dom za igralce from Anton Podbevšek Teater

.
I’m proud to present my new photo-movie on theater performance Dom za igralce, directed by Matjaž Farič and produced by Anton Podbevšek Teater. I’ve shot tons of photographs and then I was asked to make a teaser that will include also video. It’s challenging to make a video and I know what weakness and advantages are if you are shooting video with a video camera or if you’re making it with a photo-camera (nikon D3s and D7000). I was checking videos from other theater performances, but I soon decided I’ll make my own narrative. I mixed ambient sound from the performance, clean studio sound recording from the performance, an interview with the theater director Matjaž Farič, video recording from the performance and last but not least, photographs. I am foremost a photographer 🙂
How do you like it? Does it work? I know if you don’t speak the proper language it’s hard to get the full impression, but still.

Rate, comment, rock and roll!

Photo-Movie as a teaser before a theater performance by Bertolt Brecht

leave a comment »

Tomorrow the theater Anton Podbevšek Teater is having a premier theater performance OD-LOČITEV V MUKDENU / Bertolt Brecht: Dajevec. Nejevec in Ukrep. This is a theater performance by Bertolt Brecht and few days before his death he was asked which of his works present a theater of the future and he without hesitation answered Die Maßnahme. Theater director Matjaž Berger was intrigued by this statement and made this performance. The central theme of all three parts is dealing with a sacrifice of an individual in relation to a collective. The most touching moment is a statement of Peter Čeferin, the famous lawyer that defended Albanian miner workers from Stari trg in year 1989. This was the most notorious trial in former Yugoslavia, a huge violation of human rights and obvious political trial. Theater director Matjaž Berger draw a correlation of Bertolt’s abstract idea into real life event that happened in our former country in relative recent times.

I’ve made this photo-movie with photographs, an interview with the theater director, sound from the show and a theme song. It is a sort of teaser before the premier of the show and I think this kind of Photo-movies are having a great potential in the future. I hope you’ll enjoy it even if you don’t speak my language.

DRAGAN ŽIVADINOV, DUNJA ZUPANČIČ in miha turšič 20110118_9233

DRAGAN ŽIVADINOV, attractor, candidate cosmonaut. DUNJA ZUPANČIČ, visual artist. MIHA TURŠIČ, designer of zero gravity dwellings. Delak is a production house exploring postgravity art and outlining space culturalisation. It produces different sorts of contemporary art practice in the field of postgravity art: informances, exhibitions, musical and theatrical productions. 20th of April they have an informance POSTGRAVITY ART at Kino Šiška, Ljubljana.

I made this group portrait at Krvavec mountain at night with a torch. What I had in mind is a feeling of space. Few days before the shoot I drove to Krvavec to check it out how and where will I shoot and I saw this grass field bent like a crater. I wanted to create a portrait that will communicate a space, energy, team, peacefulness of the night… so this is it. I hope you’ll enjoy it. Don’t forget to rate, comment and share.

PS: Did you saw my portrait of Živa in the snow at Krvavec? Worth of a click.

PPS: Sorry I haven’t blog lately. I’m lacking time for everything. Plus I lost 8GB of pictures from a job and that was the biggest fiasco that I still didn’t overcome. Now I’m shooting on both CF cards at the same time, so I have a backup + using an imagetank to back up additional. I decided that was the last time I’ve lost images like that.
