Documentary project Great Depression

with 3 comments

.
Two years ago, at the start of my wet plate collodion path, I set myself a project to document state of bankrupt companies. Imagine the moment when the last worker at the last shift, turned the lights out. The moment when it became dead silent.

Now when I’m looking back at my videos (LINK) even blind would see the progress I’ve made. Nevertheless I love imperfection on my plates, so my plates don’t compete with flawlessness of film. This plate that is published under is about as perfect as I want it to be.

Last Thursday I went back to photograph Novoles company and Marcos Núñez Cid was recording a video about my project. He made a true masterpiece. I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Let me highlight that this project is getting quite some attention. First I had a beautiful exhibition in Gallery Photon, Ljubljana, Slovenia, then it was published in DOC! Photomagazine, issue #21, from pages 140-169 and in May, it will be featured in one of the UK’s leading photography magazines. The project was chosen to be presented on a group touring show under organization of European Month of Photography, so if I understood it correctly it will travel across Europe. Last but not least, I also sended this images to Slovenian Photography of the Year competition and the project did not pass even the first round of selection of 30 artists! If that’s not an achievement, then I don’t know what is!

Video teaser about the new theater performance of Anton Podbevšek Teater

Dear topshit readers of topshit blog,
I do keep focus of this blog on wet plate collodion process, but I’m receiving many questions sort of. OK, you do this 19th Century mambo jambo photography, but what you do for a living? On these questions I politely explain that I tried my career as an artist, I tried as a bureaucrat, I did my best as a carpenter, but only until a friend of mine introduce me to the art of human trafficking (Slovenia’s border is EU’s Schengen border), I finally have enough resources, to devote my time to wet plate collodion process and other 19th Century photographic techniques.

But seriously, since I’m “fortunate” enough to live in Slovenia, that is a micro market, I’ve been forced to learn just about everything that you can do with a camera. One of my three regular clients is also Anton Podbevšek Teater for which I’m mainly doing photography, but since cameras are recording also video, I started to play with that just as well. Now I’m hired to make also video teasers that are promoting theater performances on youtube, facebook and other social networking. This is my best video teaser so far. Words are really important, but even if you don’t speak the proper language, you will get the idea from visuals and music. I devoted extra attention to artist’s statements. I’ve made like 15 minutes of interviews and then I’ve carefully chosen 3 x 30 seconds of statements that perfectly fit visuals.

So the point of this post is that if you take an extra effort, you have another product to sell and support your behaviour disorder that wet plate collodion definitely is.

But bottom line is that this theater performance can not be missed and they have a show on 11th,12th,13th of October 2013. At 20.00. In Anton Podbevšek Teater.

Today I’ve made two plates while it was snowing. We have 84cm of snow and it was still snowing. I put chains on wheels of my car and off I went! It was a good day! Oh I forgot to mention in the video that second plate had better contrast not so muvh because of developing time, but I was sensitizing it for 6min while the first one was sensitized for 5 min.

What would we do without an army – a short film from Fotopub 2010

with 7 comments

This is a video that I’ve made on Fotopub workshop under mentorship of Anna Stevens and Ervin Hladnik Milharčič. Anna Stevens is responsible for multi-vision production of PANOS pictures and Ervin Hladnik Milharčič is a journalistic legend. I learn greatly working with Anna and her direction in narration of movie and technical tips were really valuable. Ervin Hladnih Milharčič had a workshop on how to write a reportage and although I didn’t succeed in writing a reportage text, I used his tips in shaping narration of the story. One of his great tips was to write a reportage in a shape of scorpion. First pair of pincers to grab readers attention, followed (organically) with the rest of the body; head, body, legs and on the end a sting, that in reportage should be something worth remembering. I made this video with that in mind. I intend to develop it more, since it’s going along with a petition of Mladina weekly to demilitarize Slovenia.

I used Nikon D3s, iMovie, Garage Band and QuickTime.

Today there was a press conference on new camera Nikon D3s. I was commissioned by Nikon to do a test with the camera through my daily jobs. I7ll write more about it on Friday when I’ll have more time. As you can see from the movie I’m working many jobs at the same time and today I’m finishing this issue of Mladina weekly and tomorrow I have a lecture at Faculty in Sežana. Friday sounds sunny.

PS: Today at 20:00 in Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana there is an opening of exhibition “Photonic Luminatic – new Slovenian photography and video” and you’re all invited! Few of my pics are there as well.
